Executive Director

Humanity First for Illinois is seeking an Executive Director to lead our team in realizing our Mission. This is a volunteer, part-time (10-15 hrs/wk) position. A stipend/salary is neogitable upon realization of fundraising targets.

Candidates for the Executive Directors must be current residents of the State of Illinois. Citizenship is not a requirement for any candidate.

This Executive Director will manage the daily operations of the Humanity First for Illinois Team to support internal and external partners to maximize Humanity First for Illinois’s presence and impact in moving our progressive governing agenda at the state and local levels. 

The Executive Director will lead the development, management, and implementation of our overall strategy, including overseeing the Humanity First for Illinois Leadership Team. The Executive Director will work in close collaboration with the Humanity First for Illinois Board of Directors in realizing the Humanity First for Illinois mission.

Principal Responsibilities:

Advancing Humanity First for Illinois’s vision and mission vision and mission through strategic stakeholder relationships and support for organizational leadership. Leading the development and execution of an organizational strategy to build power for all Illinoisans to advance and win our public policy agenda.

This includes:


  • supporting the recruitment and retention of a Board of Directors;

  • communicating with the Board of Directors and providing timely and accurate information for the Board to make informed decisions;

  • overseeing the development and execution of fundraising goals and strategies;

  • ensuring fiscal solvency of Humanity First for Illinois and the setting of annual operational budgets;

  • serving as primary organizational contact in the community and engaging with external stakeholders around the Humanity First for Illinois mission in accordance with our Guiding Principles;

  • ensuring the recruitment and retention of qualified personnel and a fully staffed Leadership Team;

  • being responsible for the creation of a safe and equitable work environment

  • supervising a team of leadership volunteers and/or employees; and

  • taking other steps necessary to develop and advance Humanity First for Illinois’s mission.




  • Experience working with volunteers, teaching, or group facilitation.

  • Experience effectively supervising and developing teams is required.

  • Experience working as a member of a team required.

  • Experience and skill in working with a Board of Directors.

  • Experience in fundraising and relationship management preferred.

  • Experience working with a CRM preferred.

  • Experience in representing an organization on issues of importance.

  • Ability to work with a diverse group of people.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills required.

  • Detail oriented and highly organized.

  • Creative and critical thinking ability required.

  • The ability to produce consistent, quality work in a fast-paced environment is essential.

  • Ability to manage several projects simultaneously and to adjust to frequently changing demands.

  • Proficiency in Google G Suite preferred.


Education: Demonstrated experience in fundraising or organizational or people management accepted in lieu of a relevant degree in Business Administration, Human Resources, Industrial Organizational Psychology, or other applicable field.


This position reports to: Chairperson of the Board of Directors or the Executive Committee.


Travel Requirements: Moderate travel may be required from time to time. Reimbursement may be available for this.

Salary & benefits: This position is primarily a volunteer position. A stipend/salary is negotiable by the Board of Directors upon completion of fundraising targets.


Location: This position can be filled statewide in Illinois.
